The crossed checkered flags in the distance mark the entrance to the Deming Speedway, a 1/6 mile clay oval track for Sprint and Midget class car racing. The small course in rural Whatcom County, WA draws quite a crowd to the small farming community on Friday nights in the summer.
On this evening though, the track was silent, and hardly a soul was on the streets of town. For this photographer though, the action was just getting started as BNSF's L-NWE644 pulled north past the speedway, and up the Sumas Subdivision. With the evening rays of the setting sun filtering through the lineside foliage, time was of the essence to eke out some shots. The race was on!
